To the Therapist Ready to Give Up: Please Don’t Quit Yet

There are counselors quietly wondering if they can keep going.

Maybe that counselor is you.

You still care deeply about people, but the emotional weight has become overwhelming. The sessions feel heavier. Your motivation feels lower. Your confidence feels shaken.

And beneath it all, you may be asking: “Is this calling still worth it?”

If so, you are not alone.

Many Christian therapists experience seasons of profound discouragement. Yet discouragement becomes dangerous when it convinces you that exhaustion means failure.

It does not.

Sometimes, faithful people simply become weary.

Galatians reminds us not to grow weary in doing good because, in due season, we will reap if we do not give up. Notice that Scripture acknowledges weariness before it offers encouragement.

God understands human exhaustion.

The important thing is not pretending you are fine. The important thing is returning to the One who restores you.

Before you walk away from your calling completely, ask yourself:

  • Do I need to quit—or do I need healing?

  • Have I been carrying burdens alone?

  • When was the last time I truly rested?

  • Have I nourished my own relationship with God lately?

Burned-out counselors often make permanent decisions in temporary exhaustion.

Your calling still matters. Your presence still matters. And your work still matters.

There are people who will encounter God’s comfort through your faithfulness. But you cannot continue sustainably without tending to your own spiritual health first.

That is why I wrote Guarding the Counselor’s Calling — a 31-day guide created specifically to encourage Christian therapists, help them discern spiritual warfare, and strengthen their faith and calling in less than 10 minutes a day.

You do not need to carry this alone. And this difficult season does not have to be the end of your story.
